Avenue of the Giants

A beautiful day for riding through the avenue of the giants to check out the redwood forest. Here a break in the forest near a river where we stopped for a photo and a soak in the sun.

The road through the forest, seeming almost black in parts with glimpses of sun coming through that were almost blinding in comparison. The forest and the perfectly smooth winding roads made for a magical ride.

Just for the size of it, one of the trees we walked around while strolling through among a forest path.

Trees, trees, and more trees - a younger patch of the forest where you could catch more sun, it was almost a neck strain to try and keep looking up at them.

A piece of trunk you could sit in. All up an incredible experience and a fantastic place to ride a bike through.

Eureka

Eureka, where we stayed till the sun came out again. A lot of great old buildings in the historic section filled with curious things to see. Below the entrance to a fabulous Deco theatre complete with circular ticketing booth.

Plenty of interesting murals to check out including this one on the back of the dance theatre. The town seemed to be very supportive of music and the arts.

Amongst the old there is the waterside promenade complete with seaside restaurants and views of yachts.

Oregon coast road

The Oregon Coast road, it was very wet and misty, the roads smooth and curving, plenty of forest and sea.

The glimpses of scenery that we had were beautiful and it is easier to reflect fondly on this part of the journey now that we are dry and comfortable...

 The road ahead...

Oregon Dunes and Stellar Jay

The amazing dunes on the Oregon coast, rolling forever onwards, only broken up by patches of forest. The local rangers had just found footprints from a mountain lion crossing the dunes and they often saw bears.

Hard to tell if the forest was taking over the dunes or the dunes the forest, until we came across sections of the road where the dunes had taken over the shoulder. There was not even enough room to pull the bikes over for a photo.

One of a pair of very cheeky steller jays who would have made off with our cameras had we put them down. The safer type of wildlife to have a close encounter with.

WWFU 4 More Bacon

And the love of bacon continues... In fact if you burn yourself while cooking your bacon, you can treat the wound with adhesive bacon bandages... and it includes a prize - perhaps a piece of bacon..

Oregan coast near seal cave and hot rod cafe

Another classic diner on the road heading south in Oregon, this one called the Hot Rod Diner and it came complete with hundreds of photos of hot rods, classic cars inside that you could sit in to eat, and cars decorating the roof - where else would you park them.

The rugged, beautiful coast, which made sure we were soaked through on too many days riding in Oregon.

Newport Oregon

Our stop at Newport Oregon, magnificent bridge which we crossed to head down the coast. Just one of several art Deco bridges that we rode over heading down the coast.

The first West coast beach we reached on this  section of the journey. Inviting but still a little cold for a swim. It was pretty good to see the pacific again - hope the people at home saw us wave.
